Open letters to Harper and opposition leaders: it’s time to fix the problem

Fair Vote Canada sent and issued open letters to the Prime Minister and opposition leaders - now is the time for action on electoral reform. Prime Minister Stephen Harper House of Commons Parliament Buildings Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Re: Prorogation and Re-examination: Cut to the Chase S'il Vous Plait Dear Prime Minister Harper: On Wednesday you said you ended the current Parliament (without its approval) to give your government an extended opportunity "to re-examine the overall agenda." You have granted yourself and your party two unsupervised months to correct course. Will elimination of Canada's democratic deficit be on your government's new agenda? If not it should be. Your party represents fewer than 40 per cent of Canadian voters. You can't square that minority support, and the unilateral shutdown of Parliament, with any reasonable concept of legitimate and representative democratic government. I do not accuse you of violating democracy itself only because the Canadian political system as it stands is intrinsically undemocratic.

Germany dodges bizarre election outcome thanks to its proportional voting system

First-past-the-post would have given Merkel 73% of the seats with only 39% voter support

Our colleagues at Fair Vote US made an interesting analysis on the results of the German elections.

The Sunday Edition on the state of Canadian democracy at St-Paul's university tonight!

Members of the Fair Vote Canada - National Capital Region Chapter Executive will be attending the broadcast recording of a talk by Michael Enright, host of CBC’s The Sunday Edition, on the state of Canadian democracy. They will be there to make sure that electoral reform is discussed in front of a nationwide audience and to identify more potential supporters/members.

Parade watchers got the message: representation for all!

Fair Vote members were at the pride parade, talking about how we can achieve representation for all! The parade offered thousands of recipients for our leaflets. The info fair was valuable to explain electoral reform in detail and network with other civic organization. We got 29 new people on our sign up sheet who either requested to be on our bulletin, sign up as members or even donate. Thanks to Kelsey Wagner, Kristina, Ute Thomas, Jan Heynen, Jinqi Zing, Andy Blair, Bairu Feng and Caludia Defuentes.

Come join us at the Ottawa Pride Parade!

Dear Fair Vote members,

As you may know, the Ottawa-Gatineau chapter of Fair Vote Canada will be participating in the Pride Parade this Sunday, August 30th, 2009. Members are invited to join us as we remind Canadians that an electoral system must give representation to all!

What is wrong?

Are you tired of the many elections? Would you like your vote to count without having to vote strategically? Would you like to have a greater diversity of men, women and ethnicities? Would you like parties to co-operate rather than insult each other? So do we. We are the Ottawa-Gatineau chapter of Fair Vote Canada. Here's why we want to change the current electoral system.

It's unfair, and politicians know it
